Imo State Governor, Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodinma has commended the Federal Government over the implementation of the pilot phase of the local governments digital connectivity project in Imo State. Governor Uzodinma lauded the speed with which the pilot project was implemented noting that the initiative would enhance efficient governance at local government level and boost public service delivery thereby stimulating socio-economic development at the grassroots level. The pilot phase of the project has already been implemented in five Local Government Areas in the state. The Local governments are: Ikeduru, Oru East, Isu, Oguta and Ehime Mbano. The implementation of the project in the remaining 22 local governments in the state would take place in the next three months when the second phase takes off. When I was much younger, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the late political sage, in a moment of political flamboyance and philosophical exactitude, had said life was a “continuum.” It was the time when children still rushed to their dictionaries searching for words that could build up their vocabularies. Oh, could he be talking about life stretching into the future indeterminately and without any break or what some may call interregnum? Vocabulary! Young men of yore liked to acquire them and throw them around like bullets by way of demonstrating their bombastic grammatical acquisition. Growing up, sustainability has joined my little collection. In language, there is always something for the age. Sustainable development goals could be appropriated now by the United Nations, but my little flirtation with the word is more of project, programme or policy development, nurtured or supported to endure the vicissitudes of a fragile state. Unlike in politics where the winner takes all and everything comes to a screeching, shameful halt once he exits office. Or in moments of interregnum! Could this be the reason I was excited last week seeing some images coming out of Imo State? It was quite exciting for me to see that the SkillUpImo project has not been subjected to the opprobrium of an interregnum or endured a crushing hiatus that could have a telling effect on a well-thought-out programme with which Governor Hope Uzodinma hopes to lure some youths away from the streets and crime and imbue them with tech skills for a better future, even for a better state and country. That is sustainability, that the importance of a cardinal programme of the State government was not allowed to flag. An official of the Nigerian tech partner of Meta, Innovation Growth (IG) Hub, Daniel Chinagozi, told reporters that the training was one of the series lined up to support the government in its audacious effort to decongest the streets of restless youths and give them a meaningful living. The governor in his first tenure promoted an ambitious Imo Digital Economy Agenda (IDEA) 2022 – 2026, with one of its primary pillars being Digital Literacy and Skills Acquisition. Under the programme, the government planned to train 100,000 youths, women and people living with disabilities in core 21st-century skills in software development, blockchain, game development and other technical vocational skills. A smart move by the governor was to enlist Dr Amadi, a hard-core technocrat at the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), to champion his vision for a new Imo. Perhaps for the visible achievements of the programme and even more for the love of his people, the governor has encouraged Amadi to pursue his state’s tech vision even in an ordinary capacity. The efforts of the state in this respect are measurable. The training programme provided Amadi with an auspicious opportunity to give a situation report. Speaking on Channels Television, last week, Amadi informed viewers that through the SkillUpImo project which is about a year old, the governor has trained exactly 20,000 youths in Cohorts 1 and 2 in different genres of tech application, out of which 5,000 were picked for further training by tech partners, IG Hub, representing Meta in Nigeria. On the choice of Meta, Amadi explained that the company builds its innovation around people and some of these technologies are specially suited for the promotion of MSME (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises), the sort of small businesses sprouting in different parts of the state, a number of them promoted by tech graduates of the ImoSkillUp project. Until recently, Imo State resonated mostly in ugly situations, either insecurity or mugging of Labour leaders. The governor has said his tech training drive for the youths is to stir them away from being cheap recruits for troublemakers. And Amadi would tell this writer that there is nobody who is gainfully employed that will want to spill his blood on the street. Does Uzodinma’s tech plan have the fuel boosters to accelerate to 2026 and achieve its goals without political distractions? Will it achieve its training target of 100,000 and make Imo a digitally driven state – E-Government, connected ministries, connected cities, driven on e-commerce that is powered by a state-supported broadband buildout? Time, they say, will tell. From afar, one can say Governor Uzodinma has got something good going in Imo State. On tech training for Imo youths, he has scaled the rubicon while shaming a discouraging interregnum offered by the absence of a cabinet, to press the accelerator of his best offering to the Imo people.

By Innocent Anoruo The SkillUpImo Project of Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, will on November 4, 2023, admit 40,000 Imo youths as the Cohort Three kicks off. At the event, which will hold at Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri, participants are expected to go home with startup kits. Cohort 1 of the project, which is under the state’s Ministry of Digital Economy and E-Governance, trained, graduated and equipped 5,000 youths, while Cohort 2 has 15,000. MINISTRY OF DIGITAL ECONOMY AND E- GOVERNMENT. Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State on Wednesday, September 27th 2023 graduated the 15,000 Cohort 2 Skillupimo students at the Dan Anyiam Stadium. The SkillupImo Project is the premier digital empowerment programme of H.E Dist. Senator Hope Uzodinma’s administration targeted at up-skilling, re-skilling and training 300,000 Imo youths to acquire the 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR) skill sets needed to align and fit into the evolving digital world. 5,000 Imolites had earlier graduated from the programme, thus bringing the total number of graduates to 20,000 This initiative to infuse Imo youths with digital skills is in line with the Imo Digital Economy Agenda (IDEA) 2022 to 2026 with the aim of making Imo the digital skills hubs of Africa and curbing the menace of unemployment and insecurity. GOVERNORS, MINISTERS, DIPLOMATS SET TO GRACE CEREMONY MINISTRY OF DIGITALECONOMY AND E-GOVERNMENT Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State will on Wednesday, September 27, 2023, gather governors, ministers and members of the diplomatic corps at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri, by 11am for the graduation of 15,000 youths of Imo and beyond from Cohort 2 of the SkillUpImo Project. Imo Commissioner for Digital Economy and E-Government, Dr. Chimezie Amadi, noted that the project is the premier digital empowerment programme initiated by the governor to train and equip Imo youths with the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) skillset. On February 22, 2023, the governor had graduated 5,000 youths trained in different digital skills such as front-end and back-end development, digital marketing, cyber security, data analytics, content creation, User Interface/User Experience (UI/UX) design, graphics design, tracking engineering, phone repairs and virtual assistance. “Cohort 2, which started on May 4, 2023 trained 15,000 youths in those different knowledge areas, and a lot of them have, today, launched their own startups, created their own digital ventures. Having boasted that he is not in Imo to joke, the governor has taken up various ambitious projects, including roads infrastructure and healthcare. The Owerri/Okigwe road, Owerri/Orlu road which have been completed, while Owerri/Mbaise road which is nearing completion, are visible testaments to his focused leadership.In his acceptance speech after his inauguration in 2020, the governor had promised, among others, to take Health For All (HEFA)to the 27 local councils, to strengthen existing primary healthcare workforce in the state, as well as rehabilitation, renovate and equip all dilapidated community health centres in the state. Prof.Mohammed Ajiya, the President/Chief Executive Officer of Digital Bridge Institute (DBI), Abuja, an international centre for Information and Communications Technology (ICT) studies, captured the initiative in the following words: “The beauty of the digital economy is that you could be working for a company in America, Asia or Europe from the comfort of your homeSkillUpImo is one of those initiatives that target youths to prepare them for the digital economy space, which has contributed over 18 percent to the the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).” Many tech giants are already buying into the project,while academies and examination bodies are offering certifications. Small wonder the training centres have become beehives of activities, even on public holidays.Many youths from the South South and SouthWest geopolitical zones, as well as other states troop to the centres to enrol. The youths, mostly graduates of other fields, are being trained on basic digital skills like computer appreciation, phone repair,Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) installation, and car tracking. On intermediate digital skills, the youths are trained in digital marketing, graphics, video, photo editing and digital entrepreneurship. They are also trained in advanced digital skills such as cybersecurity, UI/UX, mobile app development, front-end and back-end development, blockchain technology, data analysis and project management. The initiative is part of the move to align Imo with the Federal Government’s objective of diversifying the economy as encapsulated in the National Digital Economy Policy’and Strategy(NDEPS)2020-2030.Interestingly, other ‘bigger’ states are copying the initiative, and Imo is happy to be the pioneer in the country.
