Imo Goes Fully Digital for Vehicle Paper Renewals as IIRS Rolls Out Mandatory Online Portal

The new arrangement took effect on Monday, July 20, 2026, and allows residents to complete their vehicle renewal transactions from their homes, offices or any location with internet access, through the portal domiciled on the agency's official website.

The change was announced by the Executive Chairman of the Imo State Internal Revenue Service, Justice R. Okoye, who explained that the initiative aligns with the digital transformation agenda being pursued by the administration of Governor Hope Uzodimma, and is designed to make government services faster, more efficient and more transparent for residents across the state.

According to Okoye, the reform was specifically designed to make the renewal process easier, quicker and more convenient for every Imo resident. He noted that the deployment of technology now allows motorists to avoid long queues, repeated visits to government offices and avoidable delays that had previously characterised the vehicle documentation process. He described the initiative as part of the agency's broader commitment to accountable public service delivery and to fostering a more business-friendly environment within the state.

Under the new arrangement, all renewals of existing vehicle papers must now be conducted online through the Self-Service Portal, with no requirement for in-person visits to any Internal Revenue Service office across the state. However, the processing of new vehicle registrations will continue to be handled physically at designated offices of the agency, as the digitisation exercise for now covers only the renewal of existing vehicle documentation.

The Executive Chairman explained that the portal has been designed to guide users through the renewal process in clear, sequential steps, and that particular attention was paid to ensuring that the platform remains both simple to navigate and secure for handling residents' data and payment information. He added that a dedicated support team would be on standby throughout the transition period to assist any motorist who encounters difficulty while using the new system.

The Imo State Internal Revenue Service, which is empowered under the Imo State Revenue Administration Law to serve as the principal revenue-generating agency of the state government, has in recent months intensified efforts to expand its digital service offerings, including online tax payment, vehicle registration and document verification services, as part of a wider strategy to boost the state's internally generated revenue while improving the ease of compliance for taxpayers and residents.

The agency described the latest rollout as another concrete step toward a digitally enabled Imo State, stating that public services under the current administration are increasingly being designed around the convenience of citizens rather than around bureaucratic procedure. Officials of the agency maintained that the shift to a fully online renewal system is expected to reduce congestion at revenue offices, cut down on transaction times, and further strengthen public confidence in the integrity of vehicle documentation issued by the state government.

The Internal Revenue Service urged residents with vehicles due for renewal to visit the portal and complete their transactions promptly, noting that the platform has been built to accommodate the volume of motorists expected to migrate to the new digital process in the weeks following the transition.
